Reports suggesting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations would be rescheduled to early 2026 have been dismissed.
CAF media officer, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has described the reports springing up from an interview granted to the BBC by the CAF general secretary as untrue.
The BBC quoted the CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba as saying the continent’s football governing body was considering sending the tournament forward because of conflictions.
“Reports that the 2025 AFCON in Morocco will be played in 2026 are untrue. The Caf Exco has not taken a decision to change the timing of the competition,” Sannie wrote on X.
“The tournament will be played in 2025 despite the challenges with the international calendar.”

As it stands, the tournament has been scheduled for June 2025 in Morocco and will conflict with the 32-team Club World Cup set for June 15-July 13, 2025, in the U.S.
CAF has four representatives in the Club World Cup, and many players are likely to participate in both tournaments.
