My injury during preseason was a tough one to take – Kobbie Mainoo

Man United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has described his injury during preseason of the just-concluded season as a tough one to take.

Mainoo suffered a foot injury during Manchester United's preseason training.

Mainoo earned the confidence of manager Erik ten Hag during pre-season and even featured in the friendly against Real Madrid. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury early on in a collision with Rodrygo.

He returned in time to play 24 Premier League games and scored three important goals, also providing one assist.

Speaking ahead of England’s second 2024 Euro group game on Thursday, Mainoo opened up on how the injury affected him.

"[My injury] was a tough one to take. It took me a day or two to sink in.

“From then it was focusing on getting back and trusting the process and medical team so that I would be in better shape and position to be back.”

The 19-year-old’s rise has been one of the stories of the season. In a campaign that offered little hope until the FA Cup final, he provided much for United fans around the world to cling to.

He made his senior debut for England in the March international break against Brazil and then got his first start against Belgium, impressing in both encounters.

Mainoo saved his most important goal for last, however, as he slotted in United’s second goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, winning the famous old tournament in his debut season, despite the cacophony of issues around the club.
