Ghana football legend Dan Owusu has shared how he became a top striker in the country and Africa at large.

Owusu, who is a former player of Bofoakwa Tano, Asante Kotoko and BA United scored numerous number of goals for club and country during his playing days.

The former football icon won the Ghana Premier League goal king prize for three consecutive times (1974, 1975 and 1976).

Explaining how he became a top striker, Owusu expressed he watched Germany football legend Gerd Muller and modeled his goal scoring after him.

His comment comes whiles expressing his displeasure about the performance of strikers in the Ghana Premier League.

In recent times, the Ghanaian top-flight has failed to produce goals as compared to previous years. With five games to end the campaign, the leading topscorer in the domestic top-flight has twelve goals.

Berekum Chelsea and Hearts of Oak attackers of Stephen Amankona and Hamzah Issah have racked up 12 goals each, whiles Kotoko and Uganda international Steven Desse Mukwala has 11 goals.

In an interview with Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com, the former Black Stars forward said, “In recent times, the strikers are unable to score goals as expected. A striker scoring twelve (12) goals after thirty four (34) games in the GPL is worrisome and that shows our strikers are indeed very weak”

“Goal scoring is learnt. Anything that you want to do you have to learn and when you do you will surely know. The strikers we have now have no composure when they the get into the 18- yard box because they are always in a hurry to score”

“As a striker, it isn’t necessary to be shooting all the time when you are on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper. You should know when to shoot and when to curl or place the ball. Shooting the ball all the time won’t score. It takes braveness and strong mentality to score goals”

“When I went to Bofoakwa Tano, I faced similar challenges these current strikers are facing, I could get the ball and just shoot and wouldn’t score. I can even dribble defenders and dribble past the goalkeeper and waste the chance. I had to sit and learn on how to score goals. I watched videos of German striker, Gerd Muller and started emulating what he does on the pitch and listened to the legendary Rev. Osei Kofi and that helped me to be a good striker” he concluded.
