2024 WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations: Ghanaian athletes criticise treatment of tartan tracks at Legon Stadium

Published on: 17 May 2024

Ghanaian track and field athletes are expressing discontent over the treatment of the tartan tracks at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium during the WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations, with criticism mounting on social media platforms.

Installed specifically for the 2023 African Games, these tracks are the sole certified running tracks in Ghana, yet athletes are dismayed by their handling during the ongoing football competition.

During the opening game between Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, images circulated online revealing sharp-edged chairs positioned along the home straight side of the tracks, devoid of any protective covering.

Such neglect poses a serious risk of puncturing the track surface, potentially jeopardizing its certification status.

Joseph Paul Amoah, gold medalist in the 200m event held on this very track, voiced his frustration on social media, echoed by members of the silver-winning 4x100m men's relay team.

Ibrahim Fuseini, who clinched fourth place in the men's 200m final at the African Games, emphasized the urgency to address this issue, emphasizing the scarcity of certified tracks in Ghana.

Solomon Hammond, a vital member of the 4x100m relay team, echoed these concerns, stressing the importance of preserving Ghana's only certified track.
